Creating a clean and organized home
One of my biggest mantras is that a clean and organized space makes for an organized mind. When I look around my house and see mess on top of mess, it makes me feel stressed and overwhelmed. You too? There is value in keeping your space clean and organized beyond just having I look good. But as a busy mom and business owner myself, I know that it can feel like a big job to tackle which means it often gets pushed aside. So today I'm going to share a little bit about how I keep my home clean and organized so that it doesn't feel like it takes over my life.
The first thing to do is to create a routine for cleaning your home. Like I say with any routine, you need to find a routine that works for you and stick with it. Being consistent in your routine is one of the best ways to make anything feel easier because it becomes second nature to you. That being said, your routine will probably change as your life changes too.
For my cleaning routine, I used to tackle one item a day to break it up throughout the week. That worked for a while, but as my life has changed, so has my cleaning routine. The one problem I had with this system is that I felt like I was always cleaning and my house was never clean. So lately I've shifted to batching most of the household chores on two or three days of the week, depending on what needs to be done.
I also realized that I just don't have time to deep clean my house every week. Before kids, my house was much cleaner. I had time to clean and there wasn't a busy toddler following me around undoing what I just did. So even though it sounds bad, I just don't clean as much anymore. Don't get me wrong here, my house isn't necessarily dirty, but it isn't always spotless either. Instead, I do a light clean of the major areas once a week like bathrooms and floors and do a deep clean once a month to make sure I get in all the nooks and crannies.
Another thing I started doing last year that made cleaning much easier (and even more enjoyable if that's possible) is that I started using Grove to stock cleaning supplies. They provide better, more natural cleaning products that are also much prettier to look at which just makes cleaning a little bit more fun. Plus, you can set up a schedule so they will automatically send you new items every so often and you'll be less likely to run out (and have less to get from the store when you're out with two kids like me!).
Even though my house is rarely spotless these days, one way to fake a clean home is by keeping it organized. I don't know why, but for some reason it feels easier to me to keep things organized than it does to keep things clean. Because our house is fairly organized, it feels much cleaner.
My number one tip for staying organized is that everything has a place and you have to keep everything in that place. You need to create a system for the things in your home and you'll feel much more organized. It may take longer in the beginning to do this, but it's worth it in the end to have an organized space.
Another rule of thumb that will help keep your home organized is to only keep things in your home that are beautiful and/or functional. If it doesn't bring you joy or serve a purpose, get rid of it. Because less stuff means less to keep clean and organized. Remember how I said an organized space = and organized mind. If your space is cluttered and messy it will be distracting, but you will have a harder time keeping it organized if you have an excess of stuff.
And let's talk toys for a minute. Because along with kids, comes endless amounts of toys. Even though I try to keep our toys at a minimum and keep them organized, there's only so much you can do (if you have kids I know you understand). I used to spend hours each day picking up after my son made a mess, and then I would watch as he dumped all the toys out on the floor again. He's at the age where we are working on teaching him to put his own toys away when he's done with them, but again, there's only so much you can do, right? So instead, I wait until the end of each day and do one big sweep of the entire house to pick up the majority of the mess for a fresh start the next day.
My favorite cleaning and organizing tools
It seems like when my house is clean I don't mind a little disorganization. Or when my house is organized, the crumbs on the floor bother me less. While I wish that I could have both of these things done all the time, I also know that it's just not possible for me to do it all (and do it well). But in order to best manage my home and keep it as clean and organized as possible, these simple tools have helped me to create a better system for tackling these two tasks:
- Grove collaborative for natural cleaning products and supplies made easy
- Essential oils and cleaners for more natural goodness
- Wire baskets for all the things
- Canvas bins for toys
- File folders for all the papers
