Support your business by supporting yourself first
When you work for yourself, your business is you. There is no way you can separate yourself from your business when you are running a small business without a dedicated team of employees - if you are unable to work, then your business will be unable to operate. So, it’s extremely important that you support yourself in an attempt to further support your business. Not sure how to do that? Here are some great ideas.
The best way you can support yourself and your business is to get plenty of qualifications. That way, you will be highly knowledgeable in your business’s industry and will have plenty of skills to help you run a tight ship on your own. Thankfully, you don’t need to stop working for a couple of years to go back to school. There are now plenty of online courses, like the ones offered by the University of Southern California that you will be able to do in the comfort of your own home or office. These will be easy to fit around your regular work.
Build Your Network
Next, it’s a good idea to work on building your professional network. The more people you know who are in a similar position to you means that you will have more people who you can reach out to whenever you need some help or advice. One of the quickest ways to build your network is to regularly attend local networking events. Being more active on social media platforms like LinkedIn could work wonders for you as well. It’s also a good idea to look for support from your personal network of family and friends as well at times.
Know When To Take A Break
Your own health is very important and should always be put before your business. After all, if you are ever too sick to work, then your business won’t be able to function. So, it’s necessary that you know when to take a break from working. If you push yourself too much, then there is a good chance that you will experience burnout. This is when your stress levels are too high and you just become exhausted from all your work. It’s important to keep your stress levels in check so that they don’t affect your overall health. If you ignore the signs of stress, then you could end up developing various health conditions, such as high blood pressure and heart complications.
Get An Emergency Fund
Let’s not forget about all the financial support that you and your business will need. Without sufficient financial support behind it, there is little chance that your company will go the business. So, it’s important that you are always trying to save up however you can. One of the best things to save for is an emergency fund. You might want to try and save a large pot of cash that you can dip into for both personal and business emergencies as trying to save for two separate ones could be quite difficult. Ideally, you should have plenty of funds in this before you start working for yourself. If not, you need to put a small portion of each invoice payment into the fund so that you can try and build it as quickly as possible.
If you ever think that you have too much on your plate to deal with yourself, you don’t need to panic. There is a great solution and source of support - freelancers and contractors! You just need to outsource some of these tasks that you don’t really have time for. It’s a much better idea to outsource any excess tasks rather than working very long hours trying to fit everything in. If you do try and do everything, you will very quickly burn out and that could be a disaster for your business. So, by finding support from other freelancers, your business will be well supported during very busy periods.
Find A Mentor
Still got lots of questions and could do with a bit of extra support? If so, then it could be a good idea to look for a mentor. There are lots of experienced entrepreneurs and business owners who are more than willing to give something back to the business world by taking on mentees. Your mentor will be able to guide you and help you figure out the best way to support yourself and your business while working on your own.
