Small businesses are still real businesses
As a small business owner, do you sometimes feel unprofessional? Do you feel as if you’re a bit of a fraud? If this is the case, you’re not the only one. There’s definitely something about being a soloprenuer that makes you feel as if you’re not quite in the same leagues as the bigger businesses, but why?
Why do we naturally feel as if we’re not good enough or not on par? Because everyone has to start somewhere. And it’s highly likely that you’ve got what it takes to get as big as some of those other businesses, but you have to get there first. So don’t let the size of your company put you off. Instead, just focus on these five ways that you can stay professional.
1. Brand Yourself
First of all, you’re going to want to make sure that you brand yourself. Think about what you can do to make sure that you have strong branding in place, just like the bigger businesses that you’re comparing yourself too. If you want to look professional in the eyes of your customers, branding can help. Because if you have a strong brand in place, then customers will often be able to relate to you more, and they’ll instantly see you as more credible.
2. Use ‘We’
If you really want to look bigger than you are, avoid using ‘I’. When you talk about yourself as the business, it indicates that it is just you. And even when it really is just you, you don’t always want people to know that. If you can talk about the business as ‘we’, then you’ll be indicating that there are others that work for you. It’s just a simple trick to use, and it’s not overly deceptive, but it just provides that bigger perception when you’re talking about the business.
3. Outsource To Experts
Maybe the reason that you feel unprofessional is that you have no idea what you’re doing when it comes to certain things in the business. When this is the case, don’t attempt to do them yourself - just outsource them to professionals. From managed network security to accountancy to human resources, why attempt it yourself when there are experts to help you? This will ensure that everything you do is done to a professional standard too.
From here, you’re then going to want to think about networking. If you want your business to come across as one of the bigger professional companies, then act like them. Make sure that you’re attending industry events and that you’re networking with other professionals.
5. Setup Professionally
Finally, you should also ensure that you’re setup professionally too. Branding is definitely a simple way to really show off your company as a professional entity, but you need to have the right setup too. Not only should you ensure that you register your business, but you may find that getting a virtual address helps too. Also, you need to ensure that you have a personal domain and email address too.
