How to establish a good work environment
It doesn’t matter whether you want to design a brand-new office space or whether you want to try and restructure your existing environment, because your wellbeing should always be at the top of your list. These tips can help you create a good work environment in your office.
Natural light is crucial for your body and your wellbeing. Sunlight provides a ton of vitamin D and it also plays a part in the body’s own circadian rhythm as well. Oxford University has even started to do research to try and determine how much a person could benefit if they lived in a glass house, and that is a very interesting thought, to say the least. Now to make things even more interesting, 47% of offices don’t actually provide their employees access to natural light, and 44% of employees who work in offices have stated that the one thing that they would like to change is the amount of light that is let into the room.
For this reason, natural light really does need to be at the top of your list and it should certainly be a factor in your office design. To try and help this, make sure that your windows are not closed up and try and keep the office plan as open as possible so you don’t shut out any light on your team.
Make room to move
One of the main issues that comes with an office job is the lack of movement that comes with it. Old-fashioned and cramped cubicles really do restrict space and they also make it much harder for your team to go out on a walk as well. Most of the time, they will feel as though they are chained to their desk and this is the last thing that you want them to feel. If you want your employees to have the freedom they need to walk around and if you want to try and help them with any repetitive strain injuries that they have then one thing that you can do is have an open design. This will try and encourage people to walk around and it will also make it much easier for them to step away from their desk or even their computer. If they feel cramped then they may not be as happy as they could be and this is the last thing that you need.
Get some fresh air
Poor air quality in an office environment has been linked to a ton of health concerns. Your employees may feel tired all the time and infections will spread much easier as well. On top of this, they may be more prone to headaches as well and this is something that you will want to avoid if possible. Air quality is a huge factor that you need to consider when you have an office as it will really affect the productivity of your team. It will also really affect their wellbeing as well, and one way for you to try and fix this would be for you to design your office all around ventilation.
One obvious thing that you can do here is try and open up all of the windows. You can also try and install a set of air conditioning as well as this will really boost the amount of ventilation that you have throughout your office. Of course, if you want to take things to that next level then you could try and identify any pollutants that are in your work environment. This can be equipment, coffee machines and more, or essentially anything that emits ozone. If you have a very small office then one thing that you can do is have plants. This can be spread throughout your environment and it can also help you to remove any toxins in the air. They are aesthetically pleasing, and they can work wonders for your employee happiness.
Psychological well being
It isn’t just the physical wellbeing of your team that you have to worry about, it is the psychological wellbeing as well. you need to make sure that your office design is very stimulating and you also have to make sure that you aren’t suppressing the potential of your team. A standing desk balance board is great here and you really would be surprised at how easy it is for you to help your team get the support that they need. Psychology is a very complicated topic because everyone is unique and individual.
Stress really is so prominent in today’s society and this is especially the case when you look in the workplace. One way that you can reduce stress is to try and reduce the amount of noise that is in the workplace. Some people don’t have any problem at all when they have to work in a noisy environment but other people find it to be very hard work, so it helps to plan everything in advance so that you can reduce the amount of noise you provide. This all starts out with your office design, so place your desks away from things like photocopiers, the reception and more.
Don't forget to have fun
Another thing that you can do is try and have a recreational area. It’s super important that employees and your team are able to take breaks whenever they need and a recreational area is a great way for you to sort this out. If you want to really help your team then you can have a pool table, or even a gaming console. When you are able to integrate this into your office design, you can easily see an improvement in the performance that your employees can provide and it could seriously boost the business potential that you have as well so do keep that in mind when planning out your recreational activities.
