How I found balance in this season + how you can too

I truly believe that we can all have balance, and that we should. I think that balance is necessary for us to live a life that we love. You can’t have life without work (because, bills) and you shouldn’t have work without life. But more importantly, balance shouldn’t always be 50:50. In fact, it will never be that way. You probably won’t have that “perfect” balance between work and life, and that’s ok. Just because we use the word balance, doesn’t mean it has to be equally balanced. I think that our idea of balance needs to change first in order for us to achieve it. We have to realize that balance is a flexible thing that changes with our needs. Your balance will look different depending on where you are at in your life and what is most important in that season.

Balance for seasons

If you’ve heard me talk about balance, you’ve heard me say that balance changes depending on your season. I believe that your season of life dictates your balance. Some seasons are meant for more work while some are meant for more life. Sometimes we have to shift our focus away from where we want it to be to focus on where it needs to be. It may not always match up with what you want, but the key is to embrace what it is.

Once we realize that balance changes based on our season, we can be more open to the idea of balance in general. Don’t get stuck thinking that balance has to be one way and always that way. Balancing your work and life means that you give the amount of attention to each area that it needs, for that season.

My balance in this season

I am in a season where my balance leans more towards life. I have 2 little ones at home with me all day, every day, and my work time is limited. There are days when I wish I could sit at the computer for hours and just create. But I am quickly pulled away by little hands wanting to play, and easily reminded that on the floor playing is exactly where I need to be in this season. My version of balance right now means I spend most of my time being a stay at home mama, and the hours in between running my business. It’s not always easy, and it’s not always ideal, but it works.

But not long ago I fought this version of balance thinking I could force it to be more balanced in the middle. Let me tell you a little secret - forcing balance to be a certain way doesn’t work. Accepting the way your life and your season are balanced right now works much more to your benefit. As soon as you realize where your priorities are for this season, you can thrive. When I finally learned that I can’t be a full-time stay at home mom AND a full-time business owner, things instantly fell into place. It was easier. It was like a breath of fresh air. I wasn’t trying to do it all because I couldn’t do it all and do it well.

Now, my version of balance in this season brings me peace. Even though it doesn’t look like others, it’s right for me. I have had a hard time giving up the fact that my business has to wait. That it has to grow slowly. But when I look away from the comparison and look down at the sweet faces staring back at me, I know it is worth it. And I want the same for you. Are you at peace with the balance of this season, or are you stuck comparing yourself to others too often? (Either way, keep reading for a great resource.)
